This argument proceeds by advancing a diagnosis for what causes the various evils that beset the world, and it is on this basis that the Mohists propose jian’ai as the solution.

This article discusses the translation of jian’ai into English by the missionary-sinologists Joseph Edkins and James Legge during the mid-to-late 1800s. It points out that, while both scholars used the term “universal” to translate the concept, they differed on whether “equal” could be used.

In this essay, I argue that Mozi’s impartial care is also characteristically different in kind from the Confucian notion of humaneness. My analysis and comparison of their usage of the word ai 愛 shows that Mozi’s ai is material-oriented care, while the Confucian ai is emotion-oriented care.

Jian ai (impartial love) is one of these ideas pitted against the Confucian definition of love. This paper will explain the ideology of jian ai, how it’s different from Confucian graded caring, discuss the potential conflicts that emerged in a case of its practice and how to mitigate these conflicts.
