Edit: Dual Wielder might be a good feat to take later on too. This will allow you to dual wield Javelins, and throw one as a Bonus Action (Two Weapon Fighting can throw weapons not just Melee Attacks).

The javelin probably won't penetrate as deep as the arrow, and the target has more time to react and avoid being hit in vital areas. Same reason, just less extreme, that shooting someone with a gun is more dangerous than throwing a bowling ball at them.

Dec 13, 2015 · The advantage of the Lance is the versatile thing, si with a shield, the javelin might be better for you. Then again, you can get the Polearm master feat with the lance and not with the javelin, and it's a pretty good feat, so might want to keep that in mind.
