Even as the initial AJ 37 model entered service, Saab was working on further variants of the Viggen. Several distinct variants of the Viggen would be produced to perform the roles of fighter bomber / strike fighter (AJ 37), aerial reconnaissance (SF 37), maritime patrol / anti-surface (SH 37) and a two-seat trainer (Sk 37).

The JA37 would go on to be the most produced variant of the Viggen, with 147 aircraft delivered between eight different divisions. The JA37 was highly appreciated by those who flew it, and saw many modifications that extended its lifespan.

The Saab Ja-37 Viggen (Thunderbolt) was developed as a successor to the J-35 Draken. It was replaced by the JAS-39 Gripen in the Swedish Air Force. The first studies aimed at replacing the Draken were carried out in 1952 and 1957; Saab Ja-37 Viggen of the Swedish Air Force painted in a jungle configuration.
