The second indigenous jet fighter to be built and flown in China, the Jian (Fighter) -8, or J-8, was developed by the Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute, initially under the leadership of Huang Zhiqian, from October 1964. Its specification called for Mach=2.2 speed, a 200m/sec climb rate and a range of 1500km on internal fuel.
