The J2M5 Model 33 (30 mm), designated as Raiden Mod.33 (Prototype) (雷電三三型 (原型)), is a prototype of the J2M5 replacing the four 20 mm cannons with two 30 mm Type 5 cannons. Due to lack of material and manpower, as well as constant bombing, it never entered production lines.

Type-5 30mm is absolutely amazing, arguably the second best 30mm after ADEN. Its ballistics and accuracy are majestic, and it pretty much never sparks, but murders any fighter it even slightly touches.

Sep 12, 2023 · I find that side climbing can be necessary in the J2M5 instead of climbing straight towards the enemy in the J2M2. The 30mm cannons are nice and are pretty much guaranteed to instantly down a plane or damage them enough that they crash after taking a hit.

Feb 27, 2024 · 30mm J2M5 is good, but depends a lot on how good you are at shooting. A7M1 is a very good pick too.

Its last variants within the J2M family were bolstering the Kasei 26a engine and resulted in the J2M5 and J2M7's (which were J2M3 fuselages with the new engine). All these new variants and new engines boosted their performance, but electrical malfunctions were never truly solved.

The J2M2 is pretty unmatched in its ability to outclimb absolutely everything around its BR range, but the J2M5 (30mm) can still outclimb *most* things that it sees and slings around the incredibly potent type 5 cannons that'll oneshot almost anything you hit.
