The Tunnan was the first Swedish jet aircraft to see combat. In response to an appeal by the United Nations (UN) for military support in September 1961, an initial force of five J 29Bs organized as the F 22 Wing of the Swedish Air Force, were stationed in the Republic of Congo as Sweden's contribution to a UN peacekeeping mission . The J29F was the final variant of the J29 "Tunnan" family, used from 1955-1976, and it was the only version of the J29 able to use the RB24 AAMs, which were mostly used in case of intercepting and combat missions.

The SAAB J29, called the “Tunnan” (barrel), was the first of a series of excellent fighters built by the Swedish company SAAB. Although it only saw action in Congo as part of the UN peacekeeping force, it was judged equivalent to the American F-86 Sabre during meetings with the USAF in Europe.

J 29F has been restored to flying condition, and it’s operated by the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight (SwAFHF) at F 7 Såtenäs. In order to be able to show the Tunnan outside Sweden, it has been allocated civil registration SE-DXB.

This designation denoted approximately 300 B and E versions which were modernised between 1954 and 1956 to include the E style wing and an afterburner equipped version of the Ghost engine. Remaining F models were modified to use the American designed Sidewinder air to air missile in the early 1960s.

J29F hade E-vinge och motor med efterbrännkammare som tillsammans avsevärt höjde prestanda. Prototypen för ett av världens första pilvingade flygplan Saab J29 Tunnan premiärflögs den 1 september 1948, ett resultat av ett utvecklingsprojekt som påbörjades 1945.
