The FFVS J 22 was a Swedish single-engine fighter aircraft developed for the Swedish Air Force during World War II. At the onset of World War II, the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) was equipped with largely obsolete Gloster Gladiator (J 8) biplane fighters.

Aug 7, 2018 · In 1971, the nations of Romania and Yugoslavia joined together to develop a light strike, low-level interceptor to fulfill local requirements. For the Romanians, this became the Avioane IAR-93 "Vulture" introduced in 1979 and, for the Yugoslavians, the aircraft was known as the SOKO J-22 "Orao" ("Eagle") - introduced in 1978.

The SOKO J-22 Orao is a subsonic ground attack and reconnaissance aircraft developed jointly by Yugoslavia and Romania during the Cold War. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Viper Mk 633-47 turbojet engines, each providing a thrust of 4,000 pounds, the aircraft is capable of speeds up to 685 mph with a service ceiling of 33,000 feet.

Avioane Craiova still exisits today as an aircraft manufacturer; producing its own IAR-99 jet trainer and providing a diverse selection of aviation services. The J-22 Orao still flies in limited numbers with the Serbian air force.

Airplane J-22 "Orao" is still in operational use in the Serbian Air Force, and its modernization is underway. There are several examples of this aircraft in the Aeronautical Museum.

Following the Yugoslav aircraft industry's success in the 1970's with the G-2 Galeb [Sea Gull] and J-1 Jastreb [Hawk] airplanes, attention turned to designing a more up-to-date combat aircraft to replace the F-84 Thunderjet in supporting the fleet of Jastreb light assault planes.
