The Soko J-21 Jastreb (from Serbian Cyrillic: јастреб, lit. 'hawk'), referred to as the J-1 Jastreb in some sources, is a Yugoslav single-seat, single-engined, light attack aircraft, designed by the Aeronautical Technical Institute (ATI) and Military Technical Institute (VTI), in Belgrade, and manufactured by SOKO in Mostar.

On 30 July 1943, the 21 performed its maiden flight and on 1 December 1945, the first examples of the J 21A-1 were introduced to service. It was quickly followed by the improved J 21A-2, which featured heavier armament, and the A 21A-3 fighter-bomber.

The Saab J 21 is a peculiar airplane, not only because of its advanced features. This fighter in particular is one of the only two airplanes that were initially powered with a piston-propelled engine, then later modified to incorporate a jet engine using the same airframe and implementing very few modifications.

The SOKO J-21 Jastreb, developed in Yugoslavia, served as a light attack and ground support aircraft, playing a key role in the Yugoslav People’s Army. Introduced in the 1960s, it was designed for close air support, reconnaissance, and training missions.

During 1947, SAAB began converting the piston-engined J 21s to jet propulsion, which required extensive modifications. One hundred twenty-four aircraft were planned, however this number was reduced to 64 and they were instead mainly used as fighter-bombers.
