Formed in 1879, Ivy was the first eating club, and its founders helped to establish the club system which became, and remains, the center of dining and social life for most upperclassmen. The Ivy Club is an independent, non-profit association whose members are or have been Princeton undergraduates.

Membership in The Ivy Club continues for life, and graduate members are always welcome at the Club. Over its history of 140 years, only 4,300 Princetonians have been Ivy members, and there are now about 3,000 living graduates.

Ivy Hall had been built in 1846 to house Princeton’s law school, but the school was discontinued for lack of students. An emergency meeting was convened, and this stalwart group of sixteen was inspired by necessity to “buy a stove, hire a cook, and set up a table.”

Today, The Ivy Club has a membership of 160 Princeton juniors and seniors. Ivy continues to draw a vibrant mix of students from all over the world to its venerable Dining Room for three meals each day.

The Ivy Club opened in September 2008, spanning three floors above The Ivy restaurant. Designer Martin Brudnizki has created a fresh and imaginative Art Deco oasis in the heart of the West End to be enjoyed by our members to dine, drink and connect.

Ivy Club was the first of the permanent eating clubs. It was followed shortly after by University Cottage Club. This process was greatly aided by Moses Taylor Pyne, who provided financial assistance to most of the eating clubs.
