The Indian Ocean Rim Association is an inter-governmental organisation which was established on 7 March 1997. The vision for IORA originated during a visit by late President Nelson Mandela of South Africa to India in 1995.

Member States - IORA
All sovereign States of the Indian Ocean Rim are eligible for membership of the Association. To become members, States must adhere to the principles and objectives enshrined in the Charter of the Association.
Our Vision is to realize a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indian Ocean region by enhancing cooperation and strengthening the Indian Ocean region’s resilience to future challenges.
IORA Milestones and Achievements
First International Meeting of Experts held in Grand Bay, Mauritius to discuss the Indian Ocean Rim Initiative (IORI) with the founding Member States namely Australia, India, Kenya, Mauritius, Oman, Singapore and South Africa known as the "founding members" or the M-7.
