I did this a while back with a black gel ink pen and I was able to successfully fix almost all of the affected clothes, mostly cotton, by soaking them overnight in a large plastic bin with a bunch of hot water and OxiClean, per the instructions on the package. Then run them through the wash with detergent and OxiClean.

The darkness is similar to the old texts, but with neutral gray. The brown hue probably develops over the decades. These high concentrated iron gall inks are not without risk to a pen.

I was going to add that it was mentioned in passing that ink has two categories, printing ink and writing ink. The other places I use ink is in ink-pads for rubber stamps, and ink for dip pens for hard-core calligraphy.
