This allows you to use all Illithid Powers as a bonus action rather than as an action, which boosts their power tremendously. Many of these would be almost useless if used as a regular action otherwise.

Aug 28, 2023 · I'm at the end of the game, at the Morphic Pool. I decided to free Orpheus and reject the Emperor who then went back to the Netherbrain. I have not dipped into any illithid powers, and now that I'm about to face the Netherbrain, Orpheus says the only way to defeat it is for someone to turn into a mind flayer. Is there any way around this?

An illithid healthy from a brain-rich diet secretes a thin glaze of mucus that coats its mauve skin. So brains aren't just for horror purposes, but rather basic sustenance. An Illithid who doesn't eat brains doesn't eat, and will starve like any other creature.

Aug 27, 2023 · My Take: Illithid's don't have souls, yet Ilithid Karlach is STILL Karlach. Maybe I'm doing mental gymnastics to have to justify Karlach's sacrifice (thanks to her, Tav and Shadowheart have a future), but I think it has to do with Orpheus's powers keeping enough of Karlach in there so it's still her soul controlling the Illithid's body.

Completed the game with a fully evolved illithid team and from the moment I evolved there was almost no difficulty left in the game. Reference (I am experienced in D20 table top games) and finished tactician effortlessly because of the mobility in combat the FLY function provides.
