Against serious efforts from Pontiac, Porsche, Toyota, and others, Mazda RX-7s filled IMSA’s history books with statistics that seem implausible yet also explain why the twin-rotor machines owned its rivals through its final title taken in 1987.

1990 Mazda RX-7 IMSA GTO. In 1989, Mazda began testing a four-rotor rotary engined RX-7 GTO racing car. It had a weight-to-power ratio of less than 2kg/PS, which was outstanding performance.

For ten years in a row, staring in 1982, the Mazda RX-7 won its class in the IMSA 24 Hours of Daytona race. It would win more IMSA races in its class than any other model of the automobile, with its one-hundredth victory on September 2nd, 1990.

During much of the 1980s, the rotary engined Mazda RX-7 was among the leading IMSA GT racers, racking up nearly 100 victories. The production based machine competed in the GTU class; the U was short for 'under' referring to the displacement limit of 2.5 and later 3 litre.

This Mazda RX-7 was reportedly used in the GTU class of IMSA competitions from 1989 through 1991, during which time it is said to have been raced at Summit Point, Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, and Mid-Ohio.
