Shōhō (Japanese: 祥鳳, "Auspicious Phoenix" or "Happy Phoenix") was a light aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Originally built as the submarine support ship Tsurugizaki (Japanese: 剣埼, "Sword Cape") in the late 1930s, she was converted before the Pacific War into an aircraft carrier and renamed.

The Zuihō class (瑞鳳型), also known as the Shōhō class (祥鳳型), consisted of two aircraft carriers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) before World War II, the Zuihō and Shōhō. Both ships were originally built as submarine tenders, but were subsequently converted into carriers.

This was one of two vessels of the Zuiko Class of light carriers. She was laid down in Dec 1934, launched in June 1935 and then completed as a submarine tender Jan 1939. She was then converted in 1941 as a light carrier and entered service in Jan 1942.

Mar 24, 2022 · IJN Shōhō was the first Japanese aircraft carrier lost in WW2, a considerable morale boost for the US. As customary for the Japanese, the announcement was made much later, kept hidden for a long time, survivors being spread into other crews and not sent home.

Shōhō was the first Japanese aircraft carrier lost during the Pacific War. In total, 834 of Shoho's crew died during the attack, went down with the carrier or drown while awaiting rescue. When Shoho sank, at least 30 aircraft were lost aboard the carrier.

The Shoho succumbed at 1135 with great loss of life. The eight Japanese fighters aloft shot down one VS-2 SBD and forced another to ditch at Rossel, but the 18 Wildcat escorts destroyed five of their number.

On May 7th 1942, IJN Shoho, an aircraft carrier, was sunk by aircraft of USS Lexington (CV-2) and USS Yorktown (CV-5) in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Hit by six torpedoes and thirteen bombs, Shoho foundered quickly, sinking at 08:35 with the loss of 631 men.
