The name IC3 indicates simply that it is a three-carriage InterCity trainset. The trainsets were built 1989–98 by ABB Scandia in Randers in 153 copies, of which 96 trainsets are used by DSB. A number of sets have been exported to Sweden, Israel, Spain, United States, Canada, France, Germany and Portugal. [4] .

Jan 7, 2017 · An Israeli State Railways-operated Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) IC3 Flexliner was on loan to VIA and Amtrak, with the two three-car trainsets touring the country to promote commuter rail systems. Built by ADtranz in Randers, Denmark by a partnership of ABB and Daimler-Benz, the Flexliner trainset operated on diesel or overhead electrical power.

Going back west out of Sparks the next morning, the Flexliner was again supposed to run 15 minutes ahead of a regularly scheduled Amtrak train, this time Amtrak #5. But that train was delayed somewhere enroute and was already six hours late.
