Their teardrop shapes (in fact, IC 423 is nicknamed the Teardrop Nebula) could be caused by the stellar winds of the same stars that are the possible source of the light they are reflecting: Alnilam and Mintaka, two of the stars in Orion's belt.

IC 423 is a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion at a distance of 1,500 light-years. It is located in the middle of Orion's belt and is just 27' away from the 2.4mag bright star "Mintaka". The nebula was discovered in 1888 by Wilhelmina Fleming on photographic plates.

Another "reasonably priced telescope" side effect that I am having is that I get slight field rotation from some sort of flexure after meridian flip when my scope is pointed more horizontally. This is leading to diffraction spikes on bright stars being slightly doubled, a phenomenon usually attributable to slightly misaligned spider vanes.
