Announced on October 3, 2000, and available on December 18, the eServer zSeries 900 (z900 for short) was the first to feature the 64-bit z/Architecture extension of the S/360 architecture, still retaining the support for the 31-bit and 24-bit addressing programs back to 1964.

In 2000, IBM unveiled the eServer zSeries 900, built with e-business as its primary function, to close that gap. The Z series (Z stands for “zero downtime”) introduced several breakthroughs that continue to be employed today.

IBM zSystems is a family name that's used by IBM for all of its z/Architecture mainframe computers, beginning with the z900 released in 2000 to the IBM z16 released in May 2022. (The "z" stands for "zero downtime," which reflects the reliability of the system.)

IBM System z9 is a line of IBM mainframe computers. The first models were available on September 16, 2005. The System z9 also marks the end of the previously used eServer zSeries naming convention. It was also the last mainframe computer that NASA ever used. [1]

The IBM eServer z900 microprocessor is a seventh-generation zSeries™ (formerly S/390®) CMOS design which has achieved 1.3-GHz operation. This paper describes the 0.18-μm bulk CMOS, seven-level copper metal process and the high-frequency circuit, integration, and design methodologies developed to achieve this operation.
