For running CADAM, a computer-aided design (CAD) program, an IBM 5080 or 5085 graphics processor could be attached. The 5080 and 5085 were contained in a large cabinet that would have been positioned alongside the RT PC. The 5080 was used with a 1,024- by 1,024-pixel IBM 5081 display. [7][8]

The IBM 5080 and 6090 Graphics Systems are designed for polyline CAD/CAM applications. GDDM/MVS, GDDM/VM, and GDDM-PGF communicate with the 5080 and 6090 through GDDM/graPHIGS, a separate IBM licensed program.

Since the rise of the personal computer in the 1980s, IBM and other vendors have created PC-based IBM mainframe-compatible systems which are compatible with the larger IBM mainframe computers. For a period of time PC-based mainframe-compatible systems had a lower price and did not require as much electricity or floor space.

These are high-function work stations used particularly for graphics. You need a special nickname and file definition to access it from your 3179 (or similar) terminal: When you use a 5080 work station, the ICU panels, help, PF keys, and prompts are displayed on your terminal.

Mar 27, 2023 · IBM introduced its first raster display graphics terminal and display controller, the 5080 and 5085 respectively, in late 1983 with deliveries starting in early 1984. Many graphic functions were now performed by the display system, freeing the host computer of these tasks.

The 5080 system is a very high performance raster graphics system for supporting IBM's mainline CAE products. The developers have been able to maintain the existing standards of the 3250 system, particularly performance and image quality.

The 5080 supports the tablet as described for the 3270-PC/G, but only button 1 (to perform the DRAW command) can be used. The 5080 may be configured in either a dual-screen arrangement, or an arrangement whereby graphics and alphanumerics are shown alternately by appropriate operator action.

May 6, 2024 · IBM recycled part numbers. The display unit, consisting of the CRT screen, was given the number 5081. That is also the part number of the IBM 80 column Hollerith Punch Card, used for programming in FORTRAN and COBOL in the 1960s and '70s.
