The IA2 assault rifle, designed and built in Brazil by IMBEL, is designed to replace the FAL, M16A2 and HK33 currently in service with the Brazilian Armed Forces.

The series was adopted by the various services of the Brazilian Armed Forces to overtake an aging, mixed collection of the Brazilian IMBEL MD97, Belgian FN FAL, American M16A2, and German HK33 automatic rifles.

The IA2 5.56 assault rifle was developed by Brazilian state-owned IMBEL arms factory between 2008 and 2012. It was officially adopted by Brazilian military in October of 2013, and entered initial production.

Mar 18, 2022 · Brazil’s IMBEL have completed and delivered the first batch of new 7.62x51mm IA2 rifles. The batch of 50 rifles will be delivered to the Brazilian Army’s Army Evaluation Center (CAEx) for extensive testing.
