Aug 17, 2015 · Unless doing buffering and ASRC, the I2S input clock is what get used (other that with MSB's ProI2S where they offer a clock out). It simply is not part of the standard. I realize it is confusing since many of the DACs with I2S input are Sabre DACs with ASRC and high fs clocks. But that is not the same as having a having a single input clock.

Jan 6, 2021 · Apparently the Gustard's I2S input works in "slave mode" which means potential compatibilty issues with my Chinese converter. This was the case as not only were channels reversed ( easily fixable by swapping analog out cables around ) but there was some low level crackling accompanying the music which I could not solve.

What makes the I2S sound better is that using it bypasses the Spring’s cheap clocks and allows the much lower phase-noise Crystek CCHD-575s of the SU-1 to become the master clock for the DAC.
