Interstate 87 is the new designation for a planned highway corridor between I-40 in Raleigh and I-64 in Norfolk, VA approved by AASHTO and the FHWA in May 2016. Here's the map of the corridor from NCDOT's AASHTO application.1.

NCDOT maps show the Interstate roughly following the US 17 corridor between Williamston and South Mills. There are several areas where the Interstate may deviate from the current routing of US 17 and be placed on a new freeway.

I-87 makes up most of the major strategic corridor between New York City, the largest metropolitan area in the US, and Montreal, the second-largest metropolitan area in Canada (formerly the largest).

Dec 14, 2023 · Interstate 87 (I-87) is a proposed interstate corridor that will extend from the I-40 / I-440 interchange in Raleigh, North Carolina to the I-64 / I-464 / VA 168 interchange in Chesapeake, Virginia. The goal of I-87 is to improve regional connectivity between the Hampton Roads and Research Triangle metropolitan areas.

The I-87 Multimodal Corridor Study area extends along I-87 from the Tappan Zee Bridge to Montreal, a distance of over 300 miles. It includes important east-west connectors and other modal corridors (e.g., passenger rail, rail freight, marine, and air).
