Huitzilin was a legendary shaman and scroll-weaver appointed by the Iktomisaurus Elder Tlapo, who was also her Saurian companion who she called Claw. In her youth, she challenged fellow student Citlali and lost, though in subsequent visits, she soon began to bring snacks for her too.

This legend tells the love story of two Aztec youths, Xóchitl and Huitzilin, whose romance gave birth to the cempasuchil flower, known as the Day of the Dead flower.

Huitzilopochtli was the patron god of the Mexica tribe. Originally, he was of little importance to the Nahuas, but after the rise of the Aztecs, Tlacaelel reformed their religion and put Huitzilopochtli at the same level as Quetzalcoatl, Tlaloc, and Tezcatlipoca, making him a solar god.

Huitzilopochtli, Aztec sun and war god, one of the two principal deities of Aztec religion, often represented in art as either a hummingbird or an eagle. Huitzilopochtli’s name is a cognate of the Nahuatl words huitzilin, “hummingbird,” and opochtli, “left.”

AYOPAL-HUĪTZIL-IN, literally, "purple dye hummingbird," perhaps the Violet-crowned Hummingbird (Amazilia violiceps) [FC: 24 Aiopalhujtzili] “… is light brown, the color of tunas {fruits of the prickly pear cactus}.” Martin del Campo identified this hummingbird as the Heloise, now Bumblebee, Hummingbird (Selasphorus heloisa).
