The HUs in the WBD are arranged in a nested, hierarchical system with each HU in the system identified using a unique hydrologic unit code (HUC). Each HU within a nested level is assigned a two-digit suffix that’s appended to the HUC of the HU in the next coarsest nesting level.

Feb 7, 2013 · The 14-digit hydrologic units (HUC14s) in New Jersey is a revision of the 2006 version of these units. This version corrects some boundaries to be consistent with a new hydrography coverage based on 1:2,400 aerial photographs (NJDEP, 2008).

1. USGS Process notes for huc14 coverage: Hydrologic unit codes were used to tag each drainage basin polygon in the entire state with a 14-digit code. Various subsets of these 14 digits are included in the data set. They are coded in the attribute HUC14, which has pieces of it redefined as HUC4, HUC6, HUC8, and HUC11.

The 10-digit HUCs divide the larger sub-region into watersheds, and the 12-digit HUCs divide the watersheds into sub-watersheds. Before a standardized HUC system was developed, Indiana used 11-digit HUCs for watersheds and 14-digit HUCs for sub-watersheds.

HUC-14s are the unit by which the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) evaluates stream ecosystem health based on impervious surface coverage, and the unit by which Watershed Management plans are typically developed.
