Hong Ren, who is also known as Hongren, (Chinese: 弘仁; born 1610, Xixian, Anhui province, China—died 1663 [1] [2]) was a Chinese Buddhist monk and painter of the early Qing dynasty and a member of the Anhui (or Xin'an) school of painting. His birth name was Jiang Fang.

Hong Ren (弘仁) (1610-1663) (born Jiang Fang 江韜) became a monk after the fall of the Ming Dynasty. Hong Ren’s style has been said to represent the world in a dematerialized, cleansed version through the geometric abstraction in his paintings.

Hongren excelled in landscape painting. Emphasizing the importance of learning from nature, Hongren skillfully depicted various landscapes, especially excelling in capturing the beauty of Huangshan mountain and Wuyi Mountain.

Hongren was the foremost painter of the Anhui (Xinan) school, a centre of painting in southeast China during the Qing period that was noted for its unusual land features, especially of Huang Shan (“Yellow Mountain”), which frequently appears in paintings of the school.

Hongren favored a dry linear technique that echoes the style of the Yuan dynasty recluse-painter Ni Zan (1306–1374). In this scroll Ni's influence is apparent in the spindly foreground trees and angular rock formations.
