In 1926, Holgate and Jackson accompanied Marius Barbeau to the territory of the Gitxsans of the Upper Skeena Valley, in northwestern British Columbia, to produce images for promoting tourism to what was apparently the most photographed site in the country after Niagara Falls.

Back in Canada, Holgate sketched with A.Y. Jackson along the St. Lawrence River and in 1926, on the Skeena River in British Columbia.

Edwin Holgate was a draftsman, portraitist, landscape and figure painter, printmaker, book illustrator, muralist, war artist, and educator. As a central figure in the development of modern art in Canada, Holgate forged his own path balancing traditional and modern stylistic approaches.

Holgate accompanied his friend A.Y. Jackson on painting expeditions, including a trip to Gitxsan territory on the Skeena River in British Columbia with the anthropologist Marius Barbeau in 1926. His work was included in several Group of Seven exhibitions and he became a member in 1929.

In 1926, Holgate made a trip to northwestern British Columbia with A.Y. Jackson and Marius Barbeau. They travelled along the Skeena River, visiting small Gitsan villages. He was deeply moved by the Tsimshian Indians, disparaged by what he felt was their “rapid decline”, he became dark and brooding on the trip.

Oct 14, 2014 · The group would stop at various spots before landing in Port Essington where the Skeena broadens out to the Pacific Ocean. It’s here Holgate would draw the portrait of Wallace – and where initial negotiations between the government of Canada, Kitselas, and Kitsumkalum would take place that same trip.

During the summer of 1926, Edwin Holgate visited the Skeena River in B.C. with Marius Barbeau and A.Y. Jackson, creating a series of works from “Totem Poles, No. 1” to “Totem Poles, No. 5”.

The exhibition explored many aspects of this versatile artist’s production, including early works from his Montreal and Paris training, portraits of his Montreal circle of friends and family, paintings in oil and watercolour, his work as a war artist, and prints from his trip to the Skeena River region of British Columbia.
