As Wit, Hoid treats people differently because he has an opinion of what each person needs to hear. He isn't always correct in this opinion, but he tries to give people what he thinks they need. In Dalinar's case, he simply has too much respect for the man to be glib.

Hoid, acting as Wit, visits Kaladin while he is in prison on Ishahach 1173, seven days into his imprisonment. He tells Kaladin the story of a man named Fleet who raced a highstorm across one end of Roshar to the other.

Obviously, both Wit and Hoid aren't his real names, but I say Hoid is his name (or the one he's going by at least), and Wit is just a title, while my friend says his name is just Wit, or Hoid if you want to change it up.

I’ve read everything except Edgedancer, but I’m still not sure exactly who Wit/Hoid is. I know he jumps around the cosmere, but is he supposed to be an in-universe version of Brandon that oversees everything?

Dec 15, 2023 · Just reached the end of Way of Kings reread and I realized that the prologue was from "Wits" perspective instead of Hoid. Did BS do this to avoid confusion or does Hoid just regard himself in whatever persona he has taken on in that book?

Jan 2, 2023 · My theory is that Hoid is telling the story to Rysn. First, the audience should be from Roshar, since no one else would understand the title of King's Wit. Second, Ryan owns a ship and would relate to nautical references. Third, she holds a dawnshard, so it is reasonable to suggest that Hoid would decide to talk to her at some point.
