The Coinage of India began anywhere between early 1st millennium BCE to the 6th century BCE, and consisted mainly of copper and silver coins in its initial stage. [1] The coins of this period were Karshapanas or Pana. [2]

India developed some of the world's first coins. (scholars debate exactly which coin was first and when). Sometime around 600BC in the lower Ganges valley in eastern India a coin called a punchmarked Karshapana was created.

First Indian punch marked coins called Puranas, Karshapanas or Pana were minted in the 6th century BC by the various Janapadas and Mahajanapadas of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. These were made up of silver with different markings like Saurashtra had a humped bull, Dakshin Panchala had a Swastika and Magadha had five symbols.
