
Toms Question - High Tom, Med Tom, Low Tom, Floor Tom
Aug 27, 2020 · I play a four-piece kit: snare, bass, 12" tom, and 16" floor tom. Obviously, if I'm playing a cover in which the original drummer is executing a riff that incorporates four or five different toms, I don't have the tonal options at my disposal to emulate his exact pattern.

Jul 27, 2012 · I think the real problem is with the terminology used by drummers,non drummers,and drum companys to describe our instrument.Hi tom,tenor tom,mounted tom,rack tom,timbale tom,ride tom,bass drum tom,..you can see where the confusion starts.We need to come to some kind of universally accepted nomenclature,to end all the confusion. Apr 24, 2022 · Also, @Tiges is right: toms that are up above the bass drum are usually called "rack" toms. But "rack" is kind of a catchall term because, while up and off the floor, they might be on an actual "rack", but they could also be on a bass drum-mounted toms stand, a (floor standing) tom stand, "flying off" (attached to) a cymbal stand, or in a snare stand.

Just yesterday, after repositioning my 11in tom from the bass drum to a separate stand (to eliminate bass drum induced mic noise) I realized I had space on the stand for a 10in tom. Jan 17, 2024 · I spent a good deal of time messing with my ride cymbal placement last night; high/low, farther towards the floor tom, closer, etc. I came to the conclusion I have my ride cymbal a little higher if I have my rack tom mounted off the bass drum.

Jul 16, 2009 · That really depends on what kind of a sound you want. The popular sound these days is for both heads to cranked way up with the bottom head tighter, than the batter head. That type of tuning produces a high pitched pop sound. For a fatter sound the bottom head is tuned lower that the batter head.
