That was inevitably further shortened to yo. The common greeting among young Italian-American males was "Hey, whal-YO!", and then simply, "Yo!" And so it remains today.

It's identical to hello, hey, or hi, just probably the least formal of all. Like I wouldn't necessarily say "Yo" to an older person or someone in authority. It actually is quite an old word in English. It goes back to the 14th century. But today it's more associated as being a slang word.
