Nov 5, 2024 · Charles Heisler, an engineer, developed a locomotive that featured a V-twin steam engine—the cylinders arranged at a V-angle—mounted in the center of the boiler. This design drove a longitudinal drive shaft, which in turn powered the wheels through beveled gears.

The first locomotive of the Heisler design was built in 1891 by the Dunkirk Engineering Company. Frequent and dedicated production begin in 1894 when Heisler's design was adopted by the Stearns Manufacturing Company.

The Heisler locomotive is built in ten standard classes according to size, weight and tractive effort. The first eight classes are of the eight-wheeled type, though this group is further subdivided according to design of frame.

The Heisler locomotives were used together with conventional and geared locomotives from different manufacturers. A point of interest on their route was the bridge over the Waikato at Ongaroto, which at the time had the longest span in the southern hemisphere.
