Among the members of this order you can see practically all the types of food that exist in the animal kingdom. There are hemipterans that are phytophagous and feed on plants.

There are a variety of different liquid diets that hemipterans consume, with each having different mechanisms to obtain such diets. The three primary types of feeding mechanism employed by hemipterans are the stylet-ensheath, lacerate-and-flush as well as blood-sucking methods.

Hemipterans feed by cutting into a plant or animal and sending saliva down one of the tubes to begin digestion. The liquid food is then sucked up the other tube.

They feed in vascular tissues or on the nutrients stored within seeds. Other species live as scavengers in the soil or underground in caves or ant nests. Still others are predators on a variety of small arthropods.

Most Hemiptera are plant feeders, but some species are predaceous on other insects. A few species imbibe the blood of humans and other vertebrate animals and are important vectors of diseases in the tropics. Some species are attracted to lights.

Feeding habits. Nymphs and adults feed in the same way. Their mouth parts consist of a slender tube with two sharp stylets running down each side. All these are enclosed in the sheath-like labium and are held horizontally below the thorax when not in use.

Of particular interest are the insect order Hemiptera, which display several different feeding strategies. A defining feature of hemipteran insects is the characteristic unique mouthparts found in these organisms (Morgan et al. 2013).

The stylet-ensheath feeding mechanism is employed by the majority of hemipteran insects (Sharma et al. 2014). This mechanism is employed by plant-feeding hemipterans to obtain food. Many species of the Auchenorryncha and Sternorrhyncha suborders employ this strategy (Merritt 2014; Smith 1926).

The Hemiptera are insects with mouthparts modified into sucking tubes. Depending on families, the hemipterans feed on the plant xylem, phloem, seeds, pollen or general plant cells. Other families feed on invertebrates and some are parasites of vertebrate tissues or blood.
