The national flag of South Korea, also known as the Taegeukgi (Korean: 태극기; Hanja: 太極旗), has three parts: a white rectangular background, a red and blue taegeuk in its center, accompanied by four black trigrams, one in each corner.

The taegeuk is a Taoist icon which symbolizes cosmic balance, and represents the constant interaction between the yin and yang, also known as eum/yang (Korean: 음양; Hanja: 陰陽).

These are called trigrams and as you can see in the infographic, they represent different things separated into 7 categories. The earliest versions of the Korean flag actually had 8 sets of these. The names of these are based on hanja. Hope this infographic was helpful!

The Taegeuk represents peace and harmony. The five petals all have meaning and are related to South Korea's national flower, the Hibiscus syriacus, or Rose of Sharon (Korean: 무궁화; Hanja: 無窮花, mugunghwa). The emblem was announced on 10 December 1963.
