I believe that the Sabre was the first UNSC vehicle to have shields, which was why it was classified. Reguardless, a lot of modern fighter/bomber programs are classified for a long time. Think of the Lockheed A-12 or F-117, or how little is known about the B-21 program. Aviation defense projects and black tape go hand in hand.
