Dec 29, 2022 · I've recently purchased the MicroSemi SmartHBA2100-4i4e SAS Controller add-in card for the Z8 G4 (not knowing prior to buying the Z8 G4 that unlike the previous generation Z series workstations, the Z8 G4 has no onboard SAS controller ports and instead relies on an add-in SAS/Raid card).

May 26, 2022 · Found the solution - Unlike Dell T7920 workstations, the HP Z8 Bios is basically bare as it does not has any facility with BIOS to support Megaraid 94xx SAS controller. Quite disappointed in this workstation to be honest.

Dec 25, 2018 · Will the Z8 G4 'be willing' to accommodate an LSI MegaRAID 9260-8i SAS 6Gb/s RAID Card - HP model QG206AV/WE465AA, which has proven to operate favourably with the larger-capacity SAS HDD's? (or the later version of SAS controller, LSI 9270-8i ?)

This document describes how to install Serial ATA (SATA) and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard drives or Solid State Drives (SSD) in an internal hard drive bay. Throughout this document, all references to hard drives include solid state drives.

Hardware-assisted SAS RAID uses the LSI megaraid driver already present in the Linux kernel. It is provided by the LSI 3041E plug-in card on the HP xw4000 and xw6000 Workstation series and by the LSI 1064 and 1068 controllers on the motherboard on the HP xw8000 and xw9000 Workstation series.

System Disk Drive – 500 GB (recommended) SATA SSD. HP offers higher performing solid-state, NVMe, and SAS boot drive options which are acceptable. Recommend a HP qualified drive be selected. No other memory configurations are formally supported in AVID environments.
