SOUTHAMPTON-Class Cruiser ordered from Vickers Armstrong at Newcastle on 17th December 1934 and laid down on 31st January 1935. The ship was launched on 23rd July 1936 and was the 1st RN ship to bear this name. Build was completed on 25th August 1937 and the ship commissioned for service in the 2nd Cruiser Squadron.
