She was active in all major naval European theatres of the Second World War, in the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Her career started with service in the Home Fleet, which took her on patrols against German blockade runners and on actions during the Norwegian Campaign.

SOUTHAMPTON-Class Cruiser ordered from Vickers Armstrong at Newcastle on 17th December 1934 and laid down on 31st January 1935. The ship was launched on 23rd July 1936 and was the 1st RN ship to bear this name. Build was completed on 25th August 1937 and the ship commissioned for service in the 2nd Cruiser Squadron.

May 27, 2019 · When the 2nd World War broke out in September 1939 the Sheffield was with the 18 Cruiser Squadron, Home Fleet. She was present when the Home Fleet was first attacked by German aircraft off Norway, on 26 September. The Sheffield sustained no damage.

Sheffield was with the 18th Cruiser Squadron in September 1939, and carried out patrols in the Denmark Straits until April 1940, when she took part in the Norwegian campaign. She too remained in the south of England on anti-invasion duties until the summer, then sailed to join Force H on 22 August.
