HMS Dundee was a Shoreham -class sloop [a] of the Royal Navy. The ship was built at Chatham Dockyard, entering service in 1933. The ship saw service primarily as a convoy escort in the Atlantic. She was sunk by a German submarine while escorting one of these convoys in September 1940.

On 16 March 1917, Dundee and the cruiser HMS Achilles intercepted a large merchantman north of the Faeroe Islands and ordered her to stop for inspection. At 3.40 pm, just after Dundee’s boarding party had gone aboard, the supposedly neutral Norwegian steamer Rena revealed her concealed armament.

HMS Unicorn is a surviving sailing frigate of the successful Leda class, although the original design had been modified by the time that the Unicorn was built, to incorporate a circular stern and "small-timber" system of construction.

At 00.25, U-48 torpedoed and sank the only escort of this convoy, HMS Dundee (Capt. Oliver Maurice Fitz-Gerald Stokes, RN (retired)) in position 56º45'N, 14º14'W. She was ordered on 16th March 1931 and laid down on 1st December 1931. The ship was launched by Mrs Round-Turner on 20th September 1932 as the 3rd RN ship to carry the name previously used by two minor warships during WW1. The first was sunk by a U-Boat in 1917 and then this name was used for a Paddle Tug..

At 00.25 hours, the U-boat torpedoed and sank HMS Dundee (L 84) (Capt O.M.F. Stokes, RN), the only escort vessel of convoy at that time. Six officers and six ratings were lost. The commander survived the sinking.

SMS Leopard left port in March disguised as the Norwegian freighter Rena Norge on its mission to disrupt Allied shipping. On the 17 March it was stopped in the North Sea by the cruiser HMS Achilles and ordered to proceed to the boarding vessel HMS Dundee for inspection.
