This must be done without delay and with minimal change in the characteristics of the mix during the delivery process, and without segregation. Three primary types of trucks are usually employed to transport HMA—end-dump, bottom- or belly-dump, and live-bottom.

Material transfer vehicles (MTVs) are used to assist the paver in accepting HMA. Most pavers are equipped to receive HMA directly from end dump or live bottom trucks, however in certain situations it can be necessary or advantageous to use an MTV.

In general, there are three types of HMA transport trucks: the end dump, bottom (belly) dump, and live bottom dump (flo-boy). End dump trucks are most common; however, bottom dumps and live bottom dumps are well-suited for certain situations.

Bottom dump trucks, most often used for HMA in more rural settings, (Figure 1) unload their payload by opening gates on the bottom of the bed. Internal bed walls are sloped to direct the entire payload out through the opened gates.

End dump trucks unload their payload by raising the front end and letting the payload slide down the bottom of the bed and out the back through a tailgate (see Figure 1 and Video 1).

A: HMA pavement refers to any paved road surfaced with asphalt. The asphalt binder is heated, combined, and mixed with the aggregate at a HMA facility. HMA is loaded into trucks for transport to the paving site. The trucks dump the HMA into hoppers located at the front of paving machines.

A hot mix asphalt treatment designed specifically for thin lift (3/4 inch) placement, HMA Ultra-Thin was developed for structurally sound pavements that are showing signs of aging, oxidation or minor surface disintegration.

An end-dump truck delivers the HMA directly from the truck bed into the hopper of the paver. The mix is un­ loaded by raising the truck bed and allowing the mix to slide down the bed into the hopper. When the bed is raised, it should not come into contact with the hopper and should not be carried by or ride on any portion of the paver.

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is a combination of approximately 95% stone, sand, or gravel bound together by asphalt cement, a product of crude oil. Asphalt cement is heated aggregate, combined, and mixed with the aggregate at an HMA facility.
