Nov 7, 2012 · I just got back from an HK USA visit, I spoke real quick with the person who deals with the NFA imports, etc. for HK USA and I asked about the G28. I was told the ATF has classified it as an assault rifle and cannot be imported, except to MIL/LE users.

Sep 1, 2020 · Nope. The only difference between an HK MR762 and the G28 model is the upper receiver on the G28 is steel versus aluminum on the MR762. Outside of furniture, they are the same. Both the MR762 and G28 are semi-auto.

The HK G28 is the military designation of the HK417 and is the 7.62x51 caliber counterpart to the 5.56 caliber HK416. Issued as a designated marksman's rifle, the G28 is capable of fully-automatic fire in case of intense combat.

To make things even more confusing, HK showed the G28 E (Export?) with a suppressor in their booth at IWA Germany, which is supposed to be (at least mainly) a civilian exhibition.
