The HK21 is a German 7.62 mm general-purpose machine gun, developed in 1961 by small arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch and based on the G3 battle rifle. The weapon is in use with the armed forces of several Asian, African and Latin American countries.

The HK 23E is the latest model with longer receiver, adjustable bipod, burst fire option and two stage feed mechanism. The HK 23E is the most common version and the HK 23A1 is the least common.

The test and evaluation of a 5.56-mm HK-23A1 machine gun was conducted at US Army Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, from 18 February to 30 September 1974 for the purpose of determining the physical and technical characteristics of the weapon and ammunition. A total of 2400 rounds was fired.

It's built from a pushpin HK41 gun, and is one of only 4 semi auto German HK21A1/E guns he created that are legal to own. It uses the swing down lower, and has both .223, and .308 kits. Cost on this host in semi configuration is $28,000.00.

Testing showed that, with the shooter in a prone, bipod-supported, position, a hot barrel could be changed in an average time of 7 seconds with no other protection than the hand grip of the barrel.
