Famotidine and cimetidine are available OTC or by prescription, depending on the dose. Low-dose nizatidine is also available in OTC, but higher doses require a prescription.
In several studies, healing rates with H2RAs can be summarized: 50% @ 4 weeks, 43 to 58% @ 6 weeks, 67 to 82% @ 12 weeks. Healing rates are faster in patients with less severe GERD. ∗∗ This product is now covered by Medicaid in its OTC formulation by prescription only.

Sep 1, 2017 · Active ulcer: Oral: 800 mg orally at bedtime or 300mg orally four times daily or 400 mg orally twice daily. IM/IV: 300mg every 6 hours or 37.5 mg/hr continuous infusion. Active bleed: 37.5 mg/hr continuous IV (maximum 2400mg/day). Maintanance (duodenal ulcer prophylaxis): 400mg orally at bedtime.
Consider non-urgent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to assess for oesophago-gastric cancer in people with haematemesis. For the management of un-investigated dyspepsia use clinical judgement to offer either pylori “test-and-treat” or full dose PPI for one month. The stool antigen test is the preferred pylori test across Derbyshire.
