The Wiradjuri word “gulgong” means “deep waterhole”. Early finds of gold were negligible until Tom Saunders discovered a rich lode on Red Hill in April 1870 and the Gulgong Gold Rush began.

Gulgong is located 295 km north-west of Sydney via Bells Line of Road and the Castlereagh Highway. It is 33 km north of Mudgee and 466 m above sea-level. It is accepted that the Wiradjuri word "gulgong" means "deep waterhole".
