During the Battle of Xiapi in late 198, when the allied forces of Cao Cao and Liu Bei fought against Lü Bu, Guan Yu sought permission from Cao Cao to marry Qin Yilu's wife Lady Du (杜氏) after they won the battle. After Cao Cao agreed, Guan Yu still repeatedly reminded Cao Cao about his promise before the battle ended.

Sun Quan surprised and defeated Guan Yu's forces there, forcing Guan to lift the siege on Fancheng and retreat. Guan Yu and his son, Guan Ping, while fleeing to Yi Province (covering present-day Sichuan and Chongqing), were caught and executed by Sun Quan's soldiers.

Guan Yu won the Battle of Baima for Cao Cao. Cao Cao offered Guan Yu many rewards in the hope that he would stay. But Guan Yu was unmoved and eventually returned to Liu Bei. At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220), powerful politicians fought for supremacy.

In one of the early engagements, Guan Xing encounters Pan Zhang, whose deputy Ma Zhong (馬忠) captured his father Guan Yu in an ambush during the Battle of Maicheng. In his eagerness to avenge his father, Guan Xing pursues Pan Zhang into a valley but loses his way inside.
