What has been translated as "six hundred threescore and six" is written in the original Greek as χξϚ which are the Greek letters chi, xi and stigma whose numerical values are 600, 60 and 6 respectively. In spite of it's reputation, the number 666 is not intrinsically evil.

Sep 17, 2015 · Almost all Greek manuscripts of Revelation have exakosioi exhkonta ex, that is, six hundred + sixty + six, for a total of 666. However, in Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus (C, 04), produced in the 400’s, the number of the beast is, instead, exakosioi deka ex, that is, six hundred + ten + six, for a total of 616.

The Greek gematria value of Nero Caesar (Νέρων Καῖσαρ) would be 1,005, but the Grecized Hebrew (נרון קסר‬) value equates to 666 as indicated above. Metzger elaborates: When Greek letters are used as numerals the difference between 666 and 616 is merely a change from ξ to ι (666 = χξς and 616 = χις).
