An interesting attraction is H.M. Prison, a small colonial-era prison in old Cockburn Town on Grand Turk. This waterfront complex was built in the 1830s (the exact date is not known) and operated as the nation’s only prison until 1994. Today, the site is a historical tourist attraction.

Turks and Caicos, February 8, 2025 – The Turks and Caicos Islands Human Rights Commission (TCIHRC) carried out a scheduled review of His Majesty’s Prison in Grand Turk on January 30, 2025, as part of its mandate to oversee the welfare of individuals in places of detention.

His Majesty’s Prison in Grand Turk is transforming from a place of confinement to a proving ground for innovative rehabilitation strategies and a model for staff development.

The island's well preserved 18th-century prison closed to inmates in 1994 and is now open to visitors for self-guided tours. You can see the cells and bell tower and read about the (usually very small) prison population.

Several years after a fire gutted the Yellow Wing at His Majesty’s Prison in Grand Turk, reconstruction works have been completed. The long-awaited completion and commissioning of the Yellow Wing took place in Grand Turk on Wednesday February 21, 2024.
