The EMD GP9 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between 1954 and 1959. The GP9 succeeded the GP7 as the second model of EMD's General Purpose (GP) line, [1] incorporating a new sixteen- cylinder engine which generated 1,750 horsepower (1.30 MW). [2] .

The Southern Pacific GP9E and GP9R are rebuilds from EMD GP9 diesel locomotives that were built by General-Motors Electro-Motive Division for the St. Louis Southwestern Railway (also known as the "Cotton Belt Route") and the Southern Pacific Transportation Company.

Starting in 1970 with #3424 all existing GP9's were rebuilt into GP9E's and GP9R's. see the SP GP9 Overview for Magazine/Book References and available models.

This article is a list of Southern Pacific's GP9E and GP9R locomotives that were operated by the Southern Pacific Transportation Company. All of them have been placed in order of their numbers of when they were rebuilt between December 1979 and December 1985.

Starting in 1970, the SP GP9's entered various rebuilding programs, emerging as rebuilt GP9E's and GP9R's while the SSW rebuilds began in 1974. Some were renumbered and reclassified as heavy yard switchers .

Note that references to the 3189 as a GP9-E are in error. The "E" program was replaced by GRIP before the 3005 was cycled through. Note 1: Steam boiler removed 1960, locomotive transfered to freight service. Note 2: Steam boiler removed 1962, locomotive transfered to freight service.

Southern Pacific Railroad GP9E 3332 at Memphis, Tennessee on March 15, 1985, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as 5650 in March 1956 ( c/n 21343 ) on EMD Order 5436, it became 3483 in the 1965 systemwide renumbering.

Southern Pacific GP9E 3187 leads train 151 into San Francisco, CA on an unknown date in July 1976. On June 9, 2014 this was posted to Altamont Press. According to good sources including Strapac's fantastic SP Compendium series, SP 3191 was built in May 1954 by EMD as a model GP9, builders number 19485, SP T&NO 283, SP Class DF-602.
