The locomotives were repainted in the blue and yellow Yellowbonnet scheme, and designated GP30u (for upgraded). 78 of these survived until the BNSF merger, and most are still in use in secondary service.

Feb 20, 2025 · In his book, " EMD Locomotives," author Brian Solomon notes the GP30 was one of the builder's final four-axle road-switchers sporting the 567 prime mover. The model featured the turbocharged 567D3 engine, which could produce 2,250 horsepower. The GP30 was EMD's first to feature the now-common pointed, low, short hood.

Dec 27, 2015 · EMD's GP30 was introduced in July 1961 in response to General Electric's own U25B. The new GE locomotive (introduced in 1959) caught EMD's design engineers a bit off guard by offering a 2,500 horsepower road switching locomotive.

All units received the now standard blue and yellow warbonnet paint and new 2700 series numbers and re-designated as GP30u's for 'upgraded'. As the SPSF merger talks began, many units were painted in the Kodachrome red and yellow warbonnet.

ALBUQUERQUE NM Aug 2 1983 -- Santa Fe GP30u 2737 poses for a roster shot. EMD built the locomotive in January 1963 as GP30 1237. It was renumbered to 3237 between March and July 1970.
