Jun 20, 2006 · We bought that Gorton 8D Mill that I asked about some time back. Got it for $500 and spent another $230 for new spindle bearings. He also has a bunch of collets and an original manual we are buying from him.

May 23, 2010 · The 8D mill is a nice compact size for the small shop with limited room. It is a very accuract machine when new, if it has been taken care of over the years, is still a very accuract machine. If it is like all of the 8-1/2D's and 9J's, they have two speed motors.

Oct 28, 2014 · The mill is a good heavy duty mill and I've done a lot of projects with it. The collet in your photo fits in an adapter in the spindle. I looked at the collet adapter for sometime not really knowing if it was an adapter or the spindle.

Oct 22, 2007 · That's a early model 9J Gorton mill you have there. The one I had was a 1938 vintage, very close to the one you are looking at. Mill definitly has No. 10 B&S taper in the spindle.

Jan 20, 2004 · I've just bought a '42 Gorton 8D mill. It's a good size for my dinky garage. and seems well taken care of. It's got an 8x24 table, 12 speed table power. feed, and for a mill its size has a lot of X,Y and Z travel. It's a cool. piece. The only significant downside is that it uses unique three sided. collets.

Here we have a mid 1940's Gorton 8D vertical milling machine with a 10"x24" table. This thing is HUGE! These older machines were built to last with a level of quality that you just don't see anymore.
