Gorgora (Amharic: ጎርጎራ Gōrgōrā, also, especially formerly, ጐርጐራ Gʷargʷarā, modern pronunciation Gʷergʷerā) is a town and peninsula in northwestern Ethiopia. It is located south of Gondar on the north shore of Lake Tana, in the Semien Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region. Gorgora has a latitude and longitude of 12°14′N 37°18′E.

Apr 21, 2021 · The story of Gorgora starts in 1607 when emperor Sussinious granted a patch of land to a Jesuit mission led by Pedro Páez on an unoccupied port north of Tana, which later became Gorgora. Four years later the emperor himself settled there, making it the latest of his temporary capitals.

Gorgora is a small town by the north shore of Lake Tana, located in the Northern Part of Ethiopia, Amhara region. It is about 41 miles south of Gondar. Founded in medieval times, Gorgora was once considered a vibrant agricultural town surrounded by ancient churches and monasteries.

Gorgora served as one of the early capitals of Ethiopia during the reigns of Emperor Susenyos I and his son Fasilides before Fasilides founded Gondar. It was selected as a capital as it started with the letter “gʷa” (Ge’ez: ጐ), as dictated by a prophecy of the time (the same prophecy led to the rise of Gondar).
