Paralleling the fluctuations of everyday life, Goju balances hard and soft, the firm and pliant, the rigid and flexible. A half-clenched fist symbolizes this yin and yang relationship. The Goju fist was officially designed in 1947 by Gogen Yamaguchi Sensei, and adorns our gi in practice today.

Gōjū-ryū (剛柔流), Japanese for "hard-soft style", is one of the main traditional Okinawan styles of karate, featuring a combination of hard and soft techniques. Gō, which means hard, refers to closed hand techniques or straight linear attacks; jū, which means soft, refers to open hand techniques and circular movements.

Aug 23, 2016 · Goju-Kai Karate-Do, U.S.A. is a Karate organization presided over by N. Gosei Yamaguchi, the firstborn son of the late Gogen Yamaguchi. Among Karate practitioners, the Yamguchi family is known as one of the most highly recognized authorities of the Goju-Ryu Karate-Do institution.

After Goju had been established, it was necessary for a symbolic insignia. Miyagi Sensei created the insignia for Goju, simply by copying his own clenched fist. This symbol is still in use today.

The symbol of Goju-Ryu is a fist. It has Kanji that say “Goju-Ryu, Karate-Do” or “Hard Soft Style, Empty Hand Way”. The fist is half open and half closed to show this. The fist belongs to Gogen Yamaguchi. He and Chojun Miyagi made the fist Goju symbol in the 1930s.

GoJu Ryu's history is a culmination of the native "di" (te - Japanese) arts of Okinawa which date back over 1000 years influenced by the introduction of Chinese kempo in the 14th century as well as other arts from around Eastern Asia.
