General Sir Samuel James Browne, VC, GCB, KCSI (3 October 1824 – 14 March 1901) was a British Indian Army cavalry officer, known best as the creator of the Sam Browne belt.

Samuel Boaz Brown[1] (born October 15, 1983) is an American and Cherokee political candidate and military officer. He served in the United States Army during the War in Afghanistan, and sustained burns to thirty percent of his body due to an improvised explosive device injury in 2008.

The Sam Browne belt is a leather belt with a supporting strap that passes over the right shoulder, worn by military and police officers. It is named after Sir Samuel J. Browne (1824–1901), the British Indian Army general who invented it.

On August 31, 1858 at Seerporah, India, Captain S.J. Browne, with only a loyal sowar (orderly), advanced ahead of his detachment and attacked a rebel 9-pounder gun crew who were reloading and about to fire on the rest of his advancing men.

Samuel Browne was promoted to General in 1888, and awarded the Order of the Bath's Grand Cross in 1891. He retired from the army in 1898, moved to Ryde on the Isle of Wight where he died on the 14 March 1901 at the age of seventy four.

Sam Brown is a Republican politician who ran for Senate both in 2022 and 2024 while in Nevada. Although Brown earned the Republican nomination in 2024, he wasn’t able to overcome a narrow defeat to Democratic incumbent Sen. Jacky Rosen.
